Interview with JuJu The Poet

I recently had a chance to interview poet/author Judith "Juju The Poet" Angeles. We had a good time talking about poetry, life and the pursuit of happiness.

Jamil Jasey:
How are you?

jujuthepoet
I am well, and you?

Jamil Jasey
I am good. For people who don't know you please tell them who you are.

jujuthepoet
Well my name is Judith Angeles and I am a poet.
I have been writing all my life, but began taking it serious in the eighth grade

Jamil Jasey
Okay how serious in the 8th grade?

jujuthepoet
Well I entered in a poetry competition... you can say it was a slam.
When I shared my writing people were really touched and moved by it.
I felt free and knew this was something I wanted to do more of so, I wrote everyday. There are so many people who consider themselves writers, but they don't write everyday
(I have been guilty of this)but, a writer, writes
it's that simple

Jamil Jasey

Yes it is...a writer writes. I must say you are one hell of a writer.
What's your inspiration?

jujuthepoet
The day to day is my inspiration. Everything I see.
Most of my poems tend to be about love or the lack thereof.
My relationships and my connections to people and the world inspire me.
My hood influences me

Jamil Jasey
Okay I can feel that. Let's talk about your chapbook and the title He Art:Pieces of A Whole. I like the play on words

jujuthepoet
Yes, as you may already know, He Art is a collection of poems that is talking to a particular "he". They are like letters, messages to the he, just in poems. I called it art, because my poems are art or works of art. I paint pictures
just with words.

Jamil Jasey
Yes you do. Where can they get your chapbook from?

jujuthepoet
It's online at www.jujuthepoet.com I also offer services to print chapbooks. I am planning on doing a black history month special! 50 chapbooks for $50 20 pages max

Jamil Jasey

Can I get 50 for $49.99?

jujuthepoet
Dang, you trying to get me for a penny

Jamil Jasey
I was told every penny counts.

jujuthepoet
Yea, well then I need that penny

Jamil Jasey
Okay you can get the penny. lol Now we've described your words on paper. How would you describe your onstage performance?

jujuthepoet
Honestly, I don't like myself on the stage. I often feel out of place. That could be because of my content or because of my performance. I often feel different. I don't know many spoken word artists who write from the inside out. I often hear poems come from the outside in. If that makes any sense. Personally, performance is something that i want to improve on. I use to be better when I was a late teen, and that is because I was doing it more. Now that I have the chapbook out, I am doing it again. Let Me explain what I mean about the inside out and the outside in.
Often at poetry readings I hear poems that often point the finger ."This is what the man did to me". "This is what the molester did to me" victim, victim, victim. Or you have the "I am the shit" poem/poet and you're not
Or I am the realest, blah blah blah. I hear poems that are just play on words and I am like what? The poet's job is to create moments, or to recreate them. The best kind of poem (and I am being sarcastic) are the kind with so many metaphors you dont know if you are on Pluto or in someone's anus. Either way, I often feel out of place Don't get me wrong, there are many talented writers in the community as well, who can balance the written word with the stage very well. I think I need to master the stage just as well as i am heading with my writing...

Jamil Jasey

Okay. I like that. Now who are some of your favorite poets to listen two?

jujuthepoet

hmm....Just two. I would say, I love reading and hearing Celena Glenn spit her hot poetry and Roger Bonair Agard.

Jamil Jasey
Two good poets. What advice can you give poets just starting out?

jujuthepoet

I think the best advice I can give is to always write from a sincere place. Find like minded people who are writers and read, read, read! Also, it doesn't hurt to join a workshop or two

Jamil Jasey

Hey it wouldn't hurt. Now where do you perform at?

jujuthepoet

I perform wherever I am invited to perform "hint hint" *laughs* I have a feature coming up on January 31st in Brooklyn
at Brownstone Books 409 Lewis Ave Brooklyn, NY 11233, Phone: (718) 953-7328. I have another feature in March at Books in the Hood 815 Westchester Ave, Bronx, NY 10455 (347) 270-1215 .Then I have a book party in April at Preguntas Cafe 1528 Amsterdam Ave, New York, NY 10031, Phone: (347) 591-6387. Currently, I am organizing for a private dinner party/reading in February

Jamil Jasey
Where is at?

jujuthepoet
I haven't decided, it will be in Manhattan. I have two spots to consider. If they want to know more about that, just send me an e-mail jujuthepoet@aol.com
I plan on inviting 20ppl max

Jamil Jasey

Cool...now I want to thank you for your time...I enjoyed interviewing you

jujuthepoet

Thank you for the opportunity
